Moto E4 Plus Review

Hey /r/android,

Hope you're well. I recently purchased an E4 Plus and thought it would be helpful to post my feedback here for the masses.

A bit of background. I've been rockin' the 6p since it came out, and before that had wielded an s6 edge. Both had amazing cameras, both had shit battery life. Many of you have experienced the "early shutdown" feature that Huawei was nice enough to build into the 6p. I was absolutely sick and tired of carrying around a backup battery and/or having my phone die on me soon after arriving home from work, and so I set out to find a phone that would last me longer than 8 hours which might tide me over until the Pixel XL 2 comes out.

I searched for a while, checking out different devices from different carriers. Most phones with massive batteries either don't support Verizon's bands, have shit skins, or cost more than I was willing to pay. I settled on either the E4 Plus or the Moto Z Play. I eventually ruled out the Moto Z Play when I realized that Verizon wanted the exact same amount of money for the Moto Z Play as the Moto Z2 Play. It's the principle of the matter. THE PRINCIPLE. I'm not paying 400 bucks for a device that is a year old when I can get this years model for the same price. Offer a discount you wingnuts.

So I pre-ordered the E4 Plus. Let's quickly establish how I'm judging this device by addressing my typical usage. I make phone calls, text friends, watch YouTube, read Reddit, and occasionally browse the web. The most demanding task I put my phone through is listening to music while navigating in my car. If the phone could handle this I was going to be very happy, but I was wary of the Qualcomm 427 processor.

So the phone arrives on release day. As far as performance is concerned, I was pleasantly surprised! We'll call it pretty good. Not exceptional by any means, but perfectly acceptable for every day usage. I've been very, very happy. If you game on your phone, maybe look elsewhere, but for my use as described above this thing is perfect.

  • The camera is fine. Definitely what I miss most about the 6p but it takes decent shots.
  • DAC is also fine. A slight downgrade from the 6p.
  • Display is excellent for 200 bucks. I haven't noticed a change, your mileage may vary. Quad HD displays on phones never made much sense to me.
  • Fingerprint sensor is excellent.
  • Hardware is great! Love the feel of the device in hand. Doesn't feel like a cheap device.
  • Expandable storage is a huge plus.
  • Stock Android! Hell yes. Wish more of the gestures were baked in though, I would love to try "chopping" for the flashlight etc etc
  • Reception and call quality are excellent!
  • Speakers are fine.
  • Battery is EXCELLENT. As in, 2 days easy. I regularly come home from work with 80% left. Could probably push 12 hours screen time if I was watching my brightness.

Overall, I've been incredibly satisfied with my purchase. For 200 bucks, I think this is an incredible device. Motorola really has this part of the market cornered.

All that said, I wish there was more demand for larger batteries on the upper end of the spectrum. 5000 maH battery with a camera that rivaled the 6p would be a game changer.

Thanks for reading!
