Nintendo delays Mario Kart Tour release date until Summer 2019

Image
It’s been almost exactly a year since Nintendo revealed plans to bring its hugely popular Mario Kart series to mobiles. The Japanese gaming powerhouse said the Android and iOS game would launch before March 2019, but after months without hearing the faintest rev of an engine, the company has now confirmed Mario Kart Tour has been pushed back to a Summer release window. Nintendo announced the delay within its quarterly earnings report for Q3 2018. The extra time is apparently necessary “in order to improve quality of the application and expand the content offerings after launch,” the report reads. Editor's Pick 15 best racing games for Android Racing games are among the most popular in all of mobile gaming. It was the first genre to overcome the lack of physical buttons on smartphones well enough that it made the games worth playing. … It’s a shame that we’ll have to wait a bit longer until the Mushroom Kingdom’s greatest racers hit the track on mobile, but it’s prob

Samsung Galaxy M series: Much ado about little something

Image
Opinion post by Abhishek Baxi In the lead-up to the  Galaxy M  launch in India, social media was awash with mentions of Samsung’s new phone. Such a hype for budget and mid-range smartphones is rarely seen, especially for the Korean company. Of course, it was Samsung’s marketing dollars speaking. The phones weren’t even unveiled at the time, but the company brought out technology influencers all over who were suddenly enamored with Samsung. At least one rival took notice. On launch day, Xiaomi India Managing Director Manu Kumar Jain, and other members of Xiaomi’s leadership, took to Twitter to criticize tech media that had opted in to Samsung’s coterie. While Xiaomi executives raised valid points about media ethics, it was the first time they made public their displeasure of this practice. Many believed it was also a preemptive counter at a pair of smartphones that seem specifically designed to thwart Xiaomi’s ascent in India.  Xiaomi took several digs at Samsung on its comp

LG delivered big profit in 2018, despite major mobile losses

Image
LG at large has enjoyed a pretty successful year, according to its 2018 financial results. The Korean company reported revenue of 61.3 trillion won (~$54.4 billion) for the year, along with a full year profit of 2.7 trillion won (~$2.4 billion). The company’s 2018 profit exceeds its 2017 figure which, at the time, was LG’s highest annual profit since 2009. LG attributed the latest results to record performance by its appliances and home entertainment divisions. Its mobile unit, on the other hand, delivered a full year loss of 790.1 billion won (~$700.65 million). But the Korean company said its mobile division showed improvements due to “better material cost controls and overhead efficiencies based on the company’s platform modularization strategy.” LG says it’ll push 5G smartphones and phones with “different form factors” in order to improve its mobile footing. The company adds that it’ll also focus on “key” markets, such as the U.S. and Korea, where the brand is still doing we

What Android phone do you feel was way ahead of its time?

Personally, I really feel like Sharp was way, way ahead of the game with the Sharp Aquos Crystal from August 2014. A mid-range, consumer phone that was bezeless (save for the needed chunk for all the stuff in the bottom)? I never had the phone, but man, it is still absolutely gorgeous to me. I prefer the look of it over a lot of modern phones - especially the stuff like the Pixel 3 XL's notch and chin. I'd absolutely love to buy a refreshed version of that phone with some high-end specs in it and a proper OLED display. What about you guys? Using the dual-screen ZTE Axon M in 2019

When I ordered my ZTE Axon M from eBay, (~$150) I was worried to find that almost nobody talked about this device after the initial hype. With foldable screens on the way, how did this phone lose relevance? I figured I'd let you all know. I decided to switch out my Pixel 2 XL and, believe it or not, I'm happy I did. I have the US 64gb version. It still runs Nougat 7.1.2 but, outside of the Emojis, I barely notice the difference. Oreo is still promised, as the last update came through September 2018. With 2 screens, battery life may be a concern. Fortunately, I'm happy to report that the battery lasts almost all day with normal use, and quick charge works as advertised so battery never becomes an issue. I find myself using the big screen when I'm lounging, multi tasking when needed, and the small screen when dealing with the few issues that do exist, like running Snapchat in any mode outside of closed screen. There's a use for every mode. The middle bezel isn'

What do you think consumers will push next?

First it was to have bigger phones in general since we felt current phones were just way too small for us. Then it was to reduce the bezels on the phone (not going bezel-less yet!) since we wanted more screen and less "phone" so we can view content better, have more room for apps, etc.. THEN we get into removing the bezels completely and we already see various ways of trying to achieve this via the notch and in more recent endeavours the hole punch and slider. I'm curious as to what you all think the next consumer push would be on? I am seeing a trend on wanting an increased amount of mAh for battery but that's about it. It could be possible that we have reached the peak of the smartphone and the only thing we can do now is refine it to be faster and faster. Edit: I realized I may have gotten the terminology wrong here. It's not really a consumer push but more of an industry push. Thanks to those that have corrected me on this! :) Submitted January 30, 2019

Samsung's One UI is now rolling out to the Galaxy S9/S9+ on Verizon

The update just downloaded for me. EDIT/UPDATE: proof https://imgur.com/YzLzmIF Update 2: Having played around with it all day, I love this update. Seems to be a bit of jank/lag in some places, but a reboot helped a bit and I'm sure they'll fix that with the next patch. Also, in classic Sammy style, be prepared to dig around in settings to enable some of the new features. Oh, and be prepared to uninstall some carrier bloat. Samsung are still updating Galaxy Note 3 from 2013...

Everyone complains about Samsung not updating their phones but they released a patch to an over 5 year old phone last month: https://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/galaxy-note3/SM-N9005/ That's probably the longest supported Android phone model. Multiwindow on One UI

Let me start of by saying, One UI on the galaxy note 9 is extremely polished and Samsung totally killed it in terms of features. My disappointment is only caused by the fact that Android Pie is less intuitive and less power user friendly than Oreo and this is evident as - Pop-Up View shortcut - Samsung allowed a diagonal swipe from the top left hand corner of the screen to set any app into picture in picture mode and that's no longer possible. Multiwindow features - while in multiwindow it was earlier possible to switch the top and bottom windows and also quickly setting a window to PiP with it being no longer being possible now. Full Screen Gestures - This really is a great feature. No NAV bar on 6.4inch screen with rounded edges is aesthetically pleasing but in terms of functionality it still requires some polish because there are no Gestures that let you quickly go to split-screen multitasking and also you can't configure them to your liking. Samsung has done ev

For those buying a Moto Z3, beware of the fragile screen!

I purchased the Moto z3 yesterday for its low price price point and because it has many design choices I like. Overall I like it much more than my previous phone (iPhone 7) except for that I already cracked my screen! I decided not to buy accessories at the Verizon store because I could get the same stuff for 1/5th the price on Amazon and figured I could go 2 days without protection. I was wrong. Because of the all glass design the phone very easily slid out of my pocket onto the hard to floor at school. It left a crack that stretches across the entire screen horizontally. I would recommend this phone, but I would also recommend anyone who gets has at least a non-slippery case. Samsung profits plunge as global smartphone shipments slip

Image
Samsung reported declining profits to the tune of 28.7% year on year. Display, Memory and Mobility business most affected. Samsung is counting on future technologies like 5G and foldable smartphones to reverse the trend. Samsung has reported a drastic plunge in profits amidst a global slump in smartphone sales. The company issued their quarterly earnings report earlier today, reporting an operating profit of 10.80 trillion won or $9.7 billion. While that might seem like a healthy profit, it’s a drop of 28.7 percent year on year. The slump comes at a time when global smartphone sales declined 7 percent, the fifth consecutive quarter of decline in shipments. Samsung confirmed the decline in profit was due to slowing demand for memory chips used in smartphones and data centers. In addition to memory, Samsung’s display business was also hurt by increasing competition between panel manufacturers for mobile devices. The last few years have seen an increase in the number of man

Report: Smartphone shipments see year of decline for first time

Image
Smartphone shipments have declined in 2018, according to Counterpoint Resarch. This is the first time smartphone shipments dropped for an entire year. Huawei and Xiaomi were the only brands in the top five to see substantial growth. Smartphone shipments have been declining for several quarters, according to various industry trackers. Now, Counterpoint Research has confirmed that shipments declined four percent in 2018. This marks the first time shipments dropped for a full year, according to Tarun Pathak, associate director at the tracking company. It’s also the fifth straight quarter of declining smartphone shipments, Counterpoint noted. Pathak attributed the slowdown due to longer replacement cycles in the likes of the U.S., China, and Europe. The analyst added that higher price tags and a lack of ground-breaking innovation were the reasons why people held onto their devices for longer. Who were the big winners and losers? Samsung led the way in 2018, shipping 291.8 mi

Google also peddled a data collector through Apple’s back door, has since disabled iOS app

Image
Privacy concerns aren’t the only things in common between Facebook and Google —  TechCrunch  recently reported that Google also has an iOS app used to collected user data. Similar to Facebook’s now-defunct Facebook Research app, Google’s Screenwise Meter app uses an Enterprise Certificate to bypass the App Store. Companies typically use the Enterprise Certificate program to distribute internal employee-only apps without the App Store or Apple’s oversight. Screenwise Meter shows users how to install the Enterprise Certificate on their iOS devices. The app then shows users how to sideload an Enterprise Certificate-based VPN app and tracks one’s traffic and data through the VPN. TechCrunch noted that Google rebranded Screenwise Meter as part of the Cross Media Panel and Google Opinion Rewards programs. These programs reward participants if they agree to install trackers on their phones, PC browser, router, and television. Certain Google Opinion Rewards panels even offers special

If you haven’t picked one up yet, the wireless car charger from Tech Armor is a very good option.
