Samsung announces record profits amid leadership shakeup

Image
Samsung has announced a new leadership team consisting of three new co-CEOs. The new CEOs, Kim Ki-nam, Kim Hyun-suk, and Koh Dong-jin, will replace the current Samsung Electronics CEO Kwon Oh-hyun. Kwon unexpectedly announced his plans to step down earlier this month saying that the company needed new leadership during a period of “unprecedented crisis”. Each of the new co-CEOs will have their own area of focus. Kim Ki-nam will lead the components business, Kim Hyun-suk will be charged with looking over the consumer electronics business, and the ever popular DJ Koh (Koh Dong-jin) will be in charge of mobile and IT. Koh is a popular figure and will be recognizable to anyone who has watched the company announce a new phone in the last few years. He’s been the de-facto leader of the mobile division since 2015 and will now officially take it over. Under his stewardship, the mobile division has seen highs like the launch of the Galaxy S7 and lows like the recall of the Galaxy Note 7 .

Who Controls Carrier Compatibility?

Qualcomm for at least a few years has made one chip that works with all mobile networks. So why is it that there are phones that still do not support all US carriers. This is a android sub but one example was the Lumia 950s had no Verizon support even though the chips they used were capable of it. Another more relevant example is any chinese phone..Xiaomi, Huawei, etc and OnePlus especially all seem to leave out any CDMA support and at least band 13 LTE support. I get that they are GSM phones, but there are no GSM only chips anymore...so someone is intentionally not enabling CDMA and LTE support for some networks. Why though?   So the question here is are these manufacturers specifically excluding CDMA networks and some LTE or is this how they get the chips from qualcomm and they have no control over the networks the chips they get supports? I'm not talking about getting certification for CDMA either..which I understand why they would be reluctant to do..but why can't th

Are you buying the LG V30? [Poll of the Week]

Image
Last week’s poll summary: Out of almost 7,000 total votes , 63% of our readers said they prefer OLED screens over LCDs, while 14.7% voted LCD over OLED. 22.3% of voters said they don’t care what type of display it is, as long as it looks good. If you’re a fan of big phones, 2017 has you covered. The Samsung Galaxy Note 8 , Galaxy S8 Plus ,  Google Pixel 2 XL , and Huawei Mate 10 are all fantastic devices, and the LG also has a contender in the race with the V30. In case you missed it, we’ve just published our full LG V30 review (spoiler alert: we  really like this phone). With its gorgeous design, all-day battery life, fantastic cameras, and Hi-Fi Quad DAC, the V30 is certainly one of the best phones you can buy right now. Don’t miss: LG V30 review: a photography and videography dream However, it’s not perfect, and there are some other Android handsets out there that do a few things better than the V30. For instance, LG still has a ways to go on its software . Some of the an

Paranoid Android 7.3.1 brings camera improvements as team switches focus to Oreo

Image
Paranoid Android burst back onto the scene earlier this year  after many months in hiding. It has since received several significant updates , the latest of which, version 7.3.1, has just been released. The new version started to roll out yesterday and includes fixes for the Paranoid Camera app and the KRACK vulnerability , as well as various other improvements. In a statement, the team said that they were “confident” that this was stable and have pushed it out as their final Nougat build (they actually said that almost all of the ROMS reported bugs had been addressed in this upgrade). Now, their focus will be “solely on Oreo and stabilising [their] infrastructure.” Editor's Pick Android 8.1 Oreo Developer Preview has hints of SMS connection to Chromebooks The release earlier this week of the Android 8.1 Oreo Developer Preview build by Google resulted in a deep dive by many people to see what secrets they could find in this first public release … Here is the change l

Samsung Internet adds Night Mode, Tracking Blocker, and compatibility with Android 5+ devices

Image
Samsung Internet, an alternative to Google’s Chrome browser, has received an update with a number of great features on board. The update, which entered public beta testing in August , is now hitting the stable channel. Before looking at the features, let’s note that, with the latest update, Samsung Internet becomes compatible with virtually every modern Android devices (Lollipop or higher). Previously, the stable version of the browser was only compatible with recent Samsung devices, as well as Pixels and Nexus phones. The first new feature is Night Mode and comes in handy when using your device in low-light conditions. The feature reduces the amount of bright light emitted by the display and shows white text on a dark background for a more enjoyable reading experience. A High Contrast mode is also available and is similar to Night Mode, but allows you to increase the screen’s brightness to see the text more clearly. The new version of Samsung Internet also lets you download, inst

Essential Phone update adds fingerprint gestures, touch scrolling improvements, and more

Image
During a Reddit AMA earlier this month , the Essential team discussed some of the current problems facing the Essential Phone, and the improvements that were coming up. Among them was a fix for a touch issue that causes a stutter when scrolling, as well as finger gestures for use with its fingerprint scanner. With a nimble 75 MB update currently rolling out, Essential seems to be making good on its promises. The update, which features build number NMJ20D, delivers the aforementioned optimizations and is said to be hitting devices right now (according to Droid Life ). In addition to the expected upgrades, Essential has also rolled out the October Android security updates — including a patch for the recently discovered KRACK exploit — plus general performance improvements and bug fixes. Just as previous rumors suggested , HTC’s upcoming smartphone will sport a 5.2-inch Full HD display and come with the Snapdragon 630 chipset under the hood. The handset should have 3 GB of RAM, 32 GB of expandable storage, and a 2,600 mAh battery. Car, golf cart, ATV, wheelchair, electric bike, "hoverboard", horseless carriage, horseback riding and everything between and near them all have their uses and niches that should be identified better

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Car is not the same as horseless carriage: There is a niche for slow 3 to 10 km/h silent travel with a vehicle that has 100 cm diameter 5cm thick rigid wheels. It is for situations where movement is not just a means to get from A to B, but also a chance to view surroundings on the route. Also, the terrain can be rough and covered in snow. That is about the same niche as riding horseback. Having any kind of combustion engine for that would defeat the purpose. It has to be lithium-ion battery or fuel cell with electric motors on each wheel. Below certain velocity, rubber on wheels is not that important, especially with good suspension (which original horse carriages lacked). Horse carriage wheels were made of wood. Some wheels had iron on ground contact. When starting rigid wheel design from scratch, aluminum is better because it is harder than rubber or wood and stronger per weight than wood or iron. This kind of carriage would be more energy efficient than car an

Samsung Galaxy S8/S8 Plus update tracker [Update: Oreo beta coming today?]

Image
Update, 10/31:  The Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus may see the launch of their Android 8.0 Oreo beta program sometime today. The news arrives via Dutch website Android World  (via GSMArena ) which states that users registered on the Galaxy Beta Program are now being notified of its rollout. Android World claims that the beta will arrive in two parts: first in North America, the UK, and South Korea, before finding its way to China, France, Germany, India, Poland, and Spain sometime later. Galaxy S8 and S8 Plus owners can sign up to the beta program in the Galaxy Beta Program app available from Samsung’s Galaxy Apps store (you’ll need a Samsung account ). Like last year, access may be restricted based which carrier you’re on, but if you’re accepted, you should be able to play with the work-in-progress version of Oreo for the next couple of months (once it officially arrives). This is still speculation, for now, so we’ll update this page once we receive confirmation from Samsung. Catch up on a

Razer Phone specs leak: 8 GB RAM, 4,000 mAh battery, Dolby ATMOS sound

Arriving from a collaboration between gaming hardware company Razer, and the folks who brought us the Nextbit Robin , the Razer phone is one of the more exciting Android products on the horizon.
