Justice Department eyeing antitrust case against Google

Image
Google is said to be the target of a new Justice Department investigation, according to reports from the Wall Street Journal and Washington Post . The antitrust division of the Justice Department has put together the basics needed to form an investigation, say sources familiar with the agency’s plans. The move would put the search giant’s business practices under the microscope and could spell trouble for its multitude of business units. In addition to its main search business, Google offers a wide range of products and services, including Gmail, Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Android. Google no stranger to investigations In 2013, the Federal Trade Commission concluded a similar probe into Google’s behavior. At the time, the FTC deemed it the company hadn’t broken any laws. Even so, Google voluntarily made some changes to the way it ran select business units to appease investigators. The Justice Department and FTC only recently agreed which of the two agencies, which share an

Make IR Blasters popular again

IR Blasters are getting less and less popular. But why? Does no one ever use them? I need an IR Blaster on my phone. It's just so convenient that I wouldn't ever buy a phone without one again. But there isn't much choice anymore unfortunately. I was planning on buying the Mi 9 until I heard of the K20 Pro. I didn't really like the smaller battery on the Mi 9 so when I heard about the K20 Pro I got really excited. Especially because Redmi's normally have an IR Blaster. But it turns out the K20 Pro doesn't have one, which left me really disappointed. So I started wondering, does no one use an IR Blaster? Am I the only one who relies on it because I lost some remotes and because remotes are often out of reach (because I'm in a wheelchair). Okay, not many of you are in a wheelchair probably but IR Blasters are still convenient, right? The K20 Pro didn't have a global launch yet so I now I hope it is included in its global version, probably not though. D

Uber will now ban riders if they have a low rating

Image
We’ve long known that Uber is able to ban drivers if their ratings drop too much, but it hasn’t applied this rule to passengers. Now, Uber announced in a blog post that it’ll ban riders if they develop a “significantly below average rating.” “Riders will receive tips on how to improve their ratings, such as encouraging polite behavior, avoiding leaving trash in the vehicle and avoiding requests for drivers to exceed the speed limit,” reads an excerpt of the post. “Riders will have several opportunities to improve their rating prior to losing access to the Uber apps.” The company didn’t disclose a rating threshold for barring riders, but a spokesperson told Forbes that it’s based on the average rating for riders in each city. The change is rolling out to cities in the U.S. and Canada for now. Xiaomi teases Mi 9 variant with pop-up selfie camera (Update: It’s Mi 9T)

Image
Twitter/Xiaomi Update, May 30, 2019 (3:28AM ET): Xiaomi has now confirmed a name for its Mi 9 variant, revealing that it will indeed be called the Xiaomi Mi 9T. And it’s not the first time we’ve heard this name pop up in recent days. A Polish blog reported this week that the Redmi K20 and K20 Pro would be called Xiaomi Mi 9T and Mi 9T Pro when it launches there. Furthermore, a Russian news outlet has also claimed that the Redmi flagships would adopt the Mi 9T names when it launched in that market. Here’s the answer! Mi 9T is coming soon! Guess what T stands for? pic.twitter.com/0mY2N7lnSx — Xiaomi #5GIsHere (@Xiaomi) May 30, 2019 If the Mi 9T is indeed a Redmi K20 Pro with a new name and a few tweaks, then you should be getting a ton of bang for your buck. The new phone offers a Snapdragon 855 chipset, pop-up selfie camera, a 4,000mAh battery, and a triple rear camera setup. Original article, May 29, 2019 (5:42AM ET): Xiaomi’s first phones with a pop-up selfie camera, the

Android Pie introduced Wi-Fi scan throttling, but a fix of sorts is coming

Image
Android Pie brought plenty of new additions, but one of the more polarizing decisions was the move to disable Wi-Fi scan throttling. This move limits how often apps can scan Wi-Fi, be it for an integral system feature, to improve connectivity, or to save battery life. The throttling means foreground apps can only run four Wi-Fi scans every two minutes, while background apps are only allowed to run a scan once every 30 minutes. Now, Google has confirmed on its Issue Tracker website (h/t: Android Police ) that it’s working on a fix. Just don’t expect this solution to be very straightforward for the average user though. Editor's Pick Here’s every phone compatible with Android Q beta 3 (Updated) Updated May 29, 2019 (6:37AM ET): Google may have pulled Android Q support for the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but we've got a new phone on the list in the Xiaomi Redmi K20 Pro. I booted up my phone from my flashaholic days. Custom ROMs back then had so much personality.

I booted up my Samsung from Froyo/GB era , and I must say, I kinda miss the "spirit" and novelty the custom ROM scene brought back then. It was arguably the golden age of custom ROMs, since AOSP gingerbread had shit functionality, UI and UX. I mean, stock AOSP didn't even have swipe to dismiss notifications, or music playback controls on the notification shade, or the option to reboot when the power button is held. I don't even recall if rotation animation existed back then, I think that it only came with Cyanogenmod. Furthermore, installing a custom ROM was pretty much mandatory for low-end devices (such as my shitty 800Mhz 290MB ram pos) to gain any semblance of speed and stability. It was also at this time when manufacturers such as Sony, HTC, Samsung etc. provided their own skin which pretty much set them apart from each other. Each skin had their distinct design languages that carried the vision the manufacturers had for their lineup. Sony's timescape UI

Unpopular opnion: Google stock android has (one of) the worst bloat apps of all the OEMs

Let me start sharing my experience with an paticular google app, the Google app itself. i rooted my phone to unnistall some bloat and google bloat was part of the batch unistall, i did it(the unistall) and my phone enter the "forever loading start up screen" phase, normal problem when you fuck up some system settings(note that i didn't unistall nothing "important") anyway, i flashed the stock firmware using odin again, rooted, same proccess but this time i didnt unistall some bixby system apps to see if something changed, still "bootloop" ok, fast foward at the next day where i was basically throwing my galaxy out of the window, i had the idea to simply unistall only google app(aka the worst bloat app of all time), because this app has so many permissions that it's almost scary, guess what, this was the problem. i tested 2 times, both runs of just unistalling google app ended up in bootloop. with this stated, i have to start by speaking some

Why not make Galaxy models without a selfie camera for people who don't need one?

Samsung could make an infinity screen simply by not having a selfie camera. There are people who don't care about selfies. Personally the only camera I use is the back camera which is superior anyway. I think "selfies" are going to fall out of fashion over time. It would be quite easy to make the same phone but without the front-facing camera as another model to choose from. I'm sure many people would rather have a full screen without a hole in it. Anyone else just get a push notification ad from Google Duo?

I just got a push notification ad from Google Duo that somebody sent me a message. I opened the message. It was an Indian celebrity(?) thanking me for the birthday wishes. It was clearly an ad, I think for a sports league in India. I did not pay much attention and I was rushing to remove an app that I had honestly forgotten about. Anyone else? Edit: I should add, I am fairly confident that I am in America. Submitted May 30, 2019 at 12:45AM by angingrich http://bit.ly/2WzHh3y https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Gogo Aircraft broadband provider Gogo announced today that it will build a 5G network that will hopefully bring significantly improved internet speeds when you’re above 10,000 feet. According to Gogo, its 5G network will be built on its existing infrastructure of over 250 towers. The network will use unlicensed spectrum in the 2.4GHz range, as well as a proprietary modem and beamforming technology to send signals from the ground to the air. Editor's Pick All you need to know about every 5G phone confirmed so far (Updated April 21) “5G is coming.” We’ve heard it repeated by telecom giants and smartphone OEMs for years now. The fifth-generation network promises lightning fast download speeds, an IoT revolution, and rapid streaming with essentially zero latency, but what … Gogo also said that its 5G network will be capable of supporting additional spectrum types and bands. Even better, passengers won’t be out of luck if there’s no 5G service — the network can fall back
