Xiaomi Mi 8 launch event: What has the company got for us?

Image
MIUI Forum The Xiaomi Mi 8 launch event has kicked off in Shenzhen, China, set to give us a glimpse of the firm’s next flagship, the new MIUI 10 Android skin, and Mi Band 3 fitness tracker. The Xiaomi Mi 8 took center stage at the event, yielding a design that was true to the rumors. And yes, that includes the dreaded notch. But much like Huawei and OnePlus, the company has included a setting to hide the feature. Impressive growth in Europe and India Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun kicked off the event by highlighting the company’s impressive performance in India. He cited IDC statistics, that found Xiaomi to beat Samsung to number one in the market. The executive also touched on the company’s performance in Europe , noting growth of over 999 percent. MIUI 10 embraces AI, tall screens Xiaomi As for MIUI 10? Xiaomi has marketed the update as the “best full screen experience.” The multitasking menu has seen an overhaul, for starters, now scrolling vertically to take advantage of the

Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) owners reporting bootloop issues after Oreo update

Image
Some Samsung Galaxy A3 (2017) users are reporting issues with random reboots and getting stuck in bootloops after upgrading their devices to Android 8.0 Oreo . A handful of users on the official Samsung US community forums have noted problems with the A3 (2017) (via GalaxyClub ). Based on the reports, the rebooting issue appears to be linked somehow to the use of public Wi-Fi as multiple users managed to temporarily fix the problem on home Wi-Fi networks. Editor's Pick Android 8.0 Oreo update tracker – May 30, 2018 Welcome to our Android 8.0 Oreo update tracker. Following its public release in August 2017, Oreo is steadily finding its way to more and more Android smartphones. One user has noted that the constant freezing and resets only started occurring after installing the Oreo OTA update. The same user also commented that the problem persisted

LG V30 update tracker (Update: T-Mobile resumes Oreo rollout)

Image
Update #2 (05/30/18): T-Mobile has resumed the Oreo rollout for the LG V30. The latest version carries the build number H93220h and comes with the Android security patches for April. As well as ridding the update of the pesky bugs that halted the rollout in the first place, it also includes an AI camera update to match the V30S ThinQ . Update (05/14/18): We previously announced that T-Mobile would be rolling out an update to the LG V30. However, it looks like that update had too many bug issues and the update rollout has been scrapped. T-Mobile did not give any update as to when a new, fixed rollout would begin. We’ll keep you posted here as soon as any news emerges. Welcome to the LG V30 Android update tracker page. This page covers all major U.S. carriers with a quick reference table for each and a log with links to further details. It will be regularly updated with the latest LG V30 update information, but it won’t include general security patches on their own. We recommen

This is art: Man rigs up Google Assistant to fire a gun

Image
An artist rigs up a system that enables him to create a “Google Assistant gun,” where his voice command pulls the trigger. The YouTube video he posted of the contraption is his latest art piece. The piece raises questions about the ethics of AI and the potential legal problems it could create. The age-old question of “What is art?” has boggled the minds of many people throughout the centuries. We find it easy to accept that something like the Mona Lisa is art, but difficult to understand how a porcelain toilet autographed by an artist and presented to a gallery could pass muster. Most people would agree that art makes you think, and if that’s your definition then have I got an art piece for you: artist Alexander Reben recently released a video of his latest piece, which is him asking Google Assistant to fire a gun. Check it out below: In the 30-second-long video, Reben says “OK Google, activate gun,” to his Google Home . Rigged up right next to the Home is some sort of

LG is supplying notched OLEDs to Google (Update: More Pixel 3 info just leaked)

Image
Update 5/30/2018 at 5:15 P.M. EST:  The article below details information that suggests the upcoming Google Pixel 3 (or Pixel 3 XL) will have a notched display. We now have some new information via Roland Quandt that backs the idea that at least one of the Pixel 3 devices (likely the Pixel 3 XL) will feature the notch: Google really is going it alone: there are two Google Pixel 3 devices in the works, both based on SDM845. One has “new display hardware”, both are built by Foxconn – not HTC, LG or whomever. Launch timeframe is Aug/Sep 2018. https://t.co/CelnTfO5IB — Roland Quandt (@rquandt) May 30, 2018 The tweet also suggests that Google will design and build the Pixel 3 line completely in-house, rather than employing help from other smartphone manufacturers as it’s done in the past. Quandt also claims the devices will sport a Snapdragon 845, which honestly is probably dead on. There’s also a report from  Bloomberg citing an anonymous source that backs up the claim that the Pi

Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi Band 3 images purportedly leak, along with new Mi 8 SE

Image
Weibo The Xiaomi Mi 8, Mi 8 SE, and Mi Band 3 have apparently appeared in leaked photos. We don’t know much about the SE, but it seems to be a slightly smaller version of the Mi 8. The Mi 8 will support so-called dual-frequency navigation for decimeter-level accuracy. We already know a fair bit about the upcoming  Xiaomi Mi 8 and Mi Band 3 , but it looks like the Chinese brand is readying a Mi 8 SE for a launch event tomorrow as well. Images posted to a Weibo account (h/t: GSMArena ) purportedly show the two phones and the Mi Band 3 ahead of the event. It’s the Mi 8 SE that has us intrigued though, as we haven’t heard much (if anything) about it until this week. The image shows a phone with a notch and similarly thin bezels as the standard Mi 8. The Mi 8 SE also seems smaller than the vanilla flagship (see the header image), suggesting Xiaomi looked to Apple’s iPhone SE for inspiration in name and screen size. It’s unclear if the phone will have the same specs as the mai

Google launches over 100 AR tours for all to enjoy via its Expeditions app

Image
Google Google updated its Expeditions app to include over a hundred AR experiences. The Google Expeditions AR experiences were previously only available to students and teachers. Only phones that support ARCore can view the AR features of Expeditions. The Google Expeditions app enables people to go on virtual tours of famous places around the world, using a smartphone in a virtual reality headset . However, Google just opened access to over a hundred augmented reality functions that were previously only reserved for students and teachers as part of the Google Expeditions AR Pioneer Program. At Google I/O 2017 , Google launched the AR Pioneer Program as a way for teachers to instruct students using AR. For example, a teacher could launch the AR program focused on the human skeleton and teach students about the human body in an interactive (and futuristic!) way. Now, anyone can enjoy these AR programs through the Google Expeditions app, available on the Google Play Store

A quick look at Android P beta on the Sony Xperia XZ2

Image
Sony has always been good about releasing phones with the newest version of Android, but it’s never been  this  good. Google recently announced a number of manufacturers would soon have access to the Android P beta . This is due in no small part to the launch of  Project Treble , which separates the SoC’s firmware from the Android OEM software layer, allowing for faster updates. Don't miss: How to install Android P beta on the Sony Xperia XZ2 Google I/O 2018 was filled with many exciting announcements, but the most exciting of all was arguably the ability to install the Android P beta on smartphones outside of Nexus and Pixel devices. While this … So far, seven manufactures have announced support for the Android P beta on their devices. These devices include the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Nokia 7 Plus , Oppo R15 Pro , Vivo X21, OnePlus 6 , the Essential Phone, and the Sony Xperia XZ2 . [Opinion] Maybe soon Google Keep 'Reminders' be removed in favor of Google Tasks

Why? Because Google Keep add-on in the new Gmail for Web has a complete new UI, which follows the guidelines of the new Material Theme. And interestingly the reminder function has gone, which makes sense since there are Google Tasks just below it. Here how Google Keep looks in Gmail I think this would be a good change, the way to create tasks or reminders through Google services are very confusing and redundant (remember that Google Assistant reminder notes are still separate from Google Keep/Tasks). Why don't carriers drop the price of phones?

Why is an LG G7 $50 more than an LG G6? This doesn't only apply to the LG phones but every carrier phone I've seen, at least in Canada. It seems like the only time that it makes sense to buy a phone from a carrier is immediately upon release, otherwise the price barely change... even one or two years down the line. http://www.virginmobile.ca/en/phones/phone-details.html#!/g7thinq/AuroraBlack/64/MTH http://www.virginmobile.ca/en/phones/phone-details.html#!/g6lg/Silver/32/MTH Submitted May 31, 2018 at 12:09AM by sunjay140 https://ift.tt/2LItuiW https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I've seen the phones coming out with the notch (iPhone X, Pixel XL). Having not really seen, or physically interacted with the notch, why is it universally hated? What's the reimagined Android coming next year?

In the Bloomberg article, it says that Google has "an upgraded Android operating system for release as soon as next year that takes advantage of greater artificial intelligence capabilities. Google wants the operating system to be able to conduct more tasks without action by users." Does anyone know what this is out? Is this Fuchsia or something entirely new? If I had to speculate, it sounds like something that incorporates voice control within the OS and third party apps at a much deeper level. Maybe it suggests apps to you based on your usage, similar to what HTC has done before as well. Submitted May 31, 2018 at 01:38AM by Shadesta9 https://ift.tt/2kBv5e1 https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

I'm an Apple user. I just bought a Xiaomi Redmi 5. I cannot believe how good android is right now!

I just wanted a spare phone which ran android but I'm completely blown away by how good a budget android is right now. Stable frame rate, no frame drops, fast, sleek UI, abundant privacy settings, great screen, fast fingerprint scanner, very few bugs, great battery life. All this for less than half the price of an iPhone 6 right now. I'm genuinely shocked. I don't think there's much of a difference between iPhones and android devices now, other than camera quality (which high end android phones are good at). I'm so impressed. (I can't migrate to android full time though. There are no great android tablets right now and the chromebook scene is a little confusing) Submitted May 31, 2018 at 04:58AM by OppositeButterfly https://ift.tt/2stPANc https://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Truly Bezel-less (no notch) Phone with Stereo Speakers Solution/Concept

Yesterday, alleged Pixel 3 screen protectors were leaked and showed that Pixel 3 XL will have a notch. If you haven't seen it, here's a link to the post. As you can see, it seems as if it has a bottom bezel along with a notch, which many deem to be bad. However, since Pixel 3 will likely have stereo speakers, people in the comments have pointed out that the bottom bezel is necessary for stereo speakers to even be present on the phone. That got me thinking of a solution. I thought of a simple, yet odd, solution. Instead of having the stereo speakers facing forward on the device, why not just have them on the top and bottom of the phone? And so I made a (sloppy) concept that showed this. I basically just got the Pixel 2, made it truly bezel-less (that means no notch and no front camera, however that's solved in the picture) and tried to just show how the top and bottom of the phone would look if it had stereo speakers. here's the concept image As you can tell from th

The Pixel 3 should not have any speakers grills at all.

If these Pixel 3 leaks turn out to be true then I'm going to be really disappointed. Not because of the notch, but rather the presence of speaker grills on the phone. You see, Google bought a company called Redux that used haptics to make buttons and controls feel more natural and also used the screen to emit sounds - the screen was one giant speaker. Sure, it takes time to integrate technology from another company you acquire into your own hardware, but I was really hoping the third iteration of their Pixel phones would contain it.
