Cake Web Browser ditches search results, and it kinda works

Image
Cake Web Browser is a new mobile browser app with a unique take on mobile browsing.  When making a query, the app will load up what it deems to be the most relevant page, rather than search results. You can then swipe through other websites as if they were pictures in a gallery. The Cake Web Browser app has just been released in the Google Play Store. It’s the product of a startup called Cake, founded in 2016, and presents a whole new take on the mobile web browsing experience. When you enter a search query, instead of displaying the regular search results page, Cake will load up what it determines to be the most relevant website. You’ll then be able to swipe through a carousel of other, related pages if the first doesn’t suit your needs. Editor's Pick Need for speed – What’s the fastest Android browser? We use our Android devices for everything nowadays. Calling, texting, checking email, scrolling through social media - you name it. Among those who take their mo

Has anyone else noticed Google slowing down your phone to convince you to update?

I don't mean "update" as in buy a new phone, I mean it as installing an OTA update. I've had my Nexus 5X for around a year now, and the performance was always snappy and great, and I never thought to not update because, why not? At one point I switched to my brother's 6P after he upgraded to a Pixel. I used that for a couple of months, but the battery eventually died and I was forced to go back to my 5X. When I booted my 5X back up, I had an Android software update waiting for me. But when I read that news about Apple slowing down their phones I got curious, and I decided to do a little experiment by ignoring that update as long as possible and seeing what would happen to the performance. Well, my phone became an unbearably slow mess for around 2 months. Apps would take a good ~3 seconds to start up. Tapping the Google search bar on the homescreen was a shortcut to freezing the entire damn phone. Pressing the homescreen to leave an app took another ~3 seconds

Soundparty - easily create and share your own music (free, no ads)

Hello Reddit! I've created an app where you create songs by arranging musical building blocks. You don't have to know anything about music at all. You just arrange the blocks (kind of like musical Legos) until you like what you hear. So now everyone can easily create music! And it's easy to share your songs; they are exported and imported as a short line of text, so you can share them over sms, twitter, social apps, etc. The app is called Soundparty. Soundparty is free and doesn't have any ads. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thunderboltapps.soundparty I'm handing out promo coupon codes for the next two days, good for a free upgrade to the full version, so if you want one just let me know! I hope you have lots of fun creating and sharing music with Soundparty :-) Edit: People have asked about sharing songs as text, so here's an example. If you install Soundparty, and then copy this text to your device clipboard: Soundparty-Machine Wars

Android Auto makes me sad

I finally moved from iOS to Android (LG G6) about a 6 months ago, been extremely happy. Lot of things are way better on the Android side. Now, I got a car with the AA / Carplay support built in the infotainment system (7" Opel IntelliLink). I was pretty excited about it. Until, 1) Found out that AA is officially available only in a bunch of countries, mine not included. For how long are they planning to develop it, I believe it was released already in 2015. Worth mentioning the AA, while working, supports my language pretty much perfectly. 2) So yeah, sideloaded it. The installation reminds me the days of Symbian: Download some package from a hazy site, approve probably around 15 different permissions and confirmations and tweak 2 or 3 different settings as well. No automatic updates. 3) When connecting, the phone vibrates several times and 3-4 notifications are shown on top of eachother. Doesn't actually ooze quality. 4) After 1 to 15 minutes the connection always dies.

Android users can now tell Alexa to text someone

Essential delays Oreo 8.0 release, but gives news on 8.1 beta

Image
With Android 8.0 Oreo having been officially released in August last year, for the past few months Android users have been enduring the long wait for their phones to receive the update. While it took some time, as we enter the new year, more and more Android owners have been receiving their updates. However, there is bad news for Essential Phone owners today as it seems like they will have to wait just a little longer. This comes as the company announced that it will be skipping Oreo 8.0 and going straight to 8.1. An update on the public release of Oreo: pic.twitter.com/fPJRtX7kvY — Essential (@essential) January 30, 2018 In a statement on the official Essential Twitter account, the company explained that after Oreo 8.0 beta testing they discovered several “stability issues” which have lead them to decide to focus their efforts on Oreo 8.1. Ultimately, they said that this “will push the public release of Oreo back a couple of weeks.” Of course, while this is bound to be disap

You can now use Alexa to send SMS messages… as long as you use Android

Image
Alexa devices gain SMS functionality in the latest update. Only Android users in the US can use it for now. The feature builds upon the previously launched Alexa messaging feature. Amazon Alexa is deepening its messaging capabilities by allowing users to send SMS messages. The new service will let people use their Alexa-enabled devices to send a message to anyone in their contacts list, as long as you have an Android-powered device. Last year, Amazon introduced a feature that would allow Alexa users to make voice calls and message other Alexa users. However, this latest feature will be the first time that people are able to send a message to someone who doesn’t already own an Alexa-powered device. According to Amazon’s support page for the feature  users will first have to set up the new feature on the Amazon Alexa app for Android. Once this is done users will then be able to send a message as usual. Alexa will first try to send the message using the Alexa messaging service

Android Oreo update rolling out to the Huawei Mate 9 in the US

Image
Android Oreo is now rolling out for the Huawei Mate 9 in the U.S. The update also introduces Huawei’s EMUI 8.0 software skin and the January 2018 security patch. Huawei promises to deliver monthly updates to higher-end phones like the Mate 9. U.S. wireless carriers might have given Huawei and its flagship Mate 10 the cold shoulder , but Mate 9 owners can still rejoice in the goodness that is Android 8.0 Oreo . Earlier today,  Droid Life spotted that the cookie-branded update is rolling out to models MHA-L29 and MHA-L09. The former is the one sold in the U.S. through Best Buy and other retailers, though both models are the international variants. As for what is new, Oreo introduces persistent notifications, adaptive icons, picture-in-picture mode, and plenty more. It is the most approachable Android version we have encountered and brings a little more polish to an operating system that has been in need of it for a little while. Editor's Pick New leak suggests

Google Assistant adds Hindi language support for India (sort of)

Image
Google Assistant voice commands can now understand the Hindi language, which is spoken largely in India. However, the Android device settings must have English – India as the main language for this support to work. Google Assistant then translates Hindi voice commands to English. Google Assistant is expanding its language support in one of Android’s biggest markets—India. According to a few reports around the internet, Hindi language support is currently rolling out to supported Android devices in India, but there is a twist to it. The added support was first reported by The Android Soul , but as Android Police points out , if you live in India and have your phone set to the Hindi language, it will not work with Google Assistant. Instead, those users have to set their device language to “English – India”, and then tap or hold on the smartphone’s home button to activate Google Assistant. Users can then speak in the Hindi language, and Google Assistant will then transcribe th

Best cheap Android tablets (January 2018)

While high-end devices are generally the stars of the Android world, there is a growing emphasis into quality on a budget, and that’s very visible in the tablet arena.
