Old Android phones that are still good for everyday use?

What old Android phones are still good for everyday use? I'm still using OnePlus One that I bought back when you needed an invite in order to buy one. It's still doing great especially after flashing a new custom ROM (shame that CyanogenMod that came preinstalled with it no longer gets updates). I still also own good old Samsung Galaxy S, but it seems that it doesn't really have a custom ROM scene anymore and it hasn't got any official updates for years so I don't think it would be really usable anymore. Edit: I'm not considering to buy a phone, just curious about the topic Submitted February 26, 2018 at 11:51AM by teekal http://ift.tt/2HMDBBf http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Why doesn't Google add iMessage like feature into the Android messages app?

There is an Android Messages app in tbe Play Store that allows you to send and receive text messages. It is made and updated by Google and included in the Pixels. Google has been trying to make an iMessage competitor for a while. So why don't they add that feature in the currently existing app rather than building a seperate messaging app? Played with the S9/+ extensively and here are some of my thoughts.

Compared the S9 with the S8 and here're some of my thoughts. The display is an improvement over S8, though it may be unnoticed to the untrained eye. I've noticed a wider colour gamut (by comparing the red on the youtube logo with S8, did the same when S8 came out with the S7). Perhaps upwards of 150% sRGB maybe even 160% (S8 is 142%, the best by quite a bit right now). With the max brightness increase it could be the best screen right now, but of course still needs to wait for displaymate's review. The speakers are much clearer and punchier. Didn't notice a big volume increase from S8. S9+ has louder speakers than the regular. Dolby atmos is onboard (remember it from s8's oreo beta?). Camera is of course improved but not as much as I would've liked. HDR seemed like largely the same as S8, but the zig zag hdr effect (on S7 and S8) has been reduced. Live focus on both front and back, portrait shots were quite smudgey on both sides. Indoor shots didn't diff

Vivo takes its In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology to another level

Image
Hot on the heels of its in-display fingerprint scanner announcements CES 2018 and its X20 Plus UD handset, Vivo has unveiled its new APEX concept smartphone that builds on the cutting edge fingerprint technology. The APEX boasts the company’s Half-Screen In-Display Fingerprint Scanning Technology, which as the name suggests means that the entire bottom half of the display works as a fingerprint scanner. Vivo is the first company to demonstrate such a technology. Increasing the area that users can register a fingerprint has the immediate benefit of more consistently registering your fingerprint, with less dependency on correct positioning and orientation. It’s simply going to work better. Let’s not forget that embedding the technology in the display is more convenient than previous systems and enables a more natural interaction for unlocking your phone, rather than having to reach for a dedicated button or piece of scanning hardware. So let’s explore how Vivo has managed to get this

Samsung boss says being first is no longer important

Image
During a press conference at MWC 2018, DJ Koh stated Samsung Mobile is no longer interested in being “first” with any new feature. Samsung has a long history of firsts in the mobile industry, so this represents a big change for it. With the Galaxy S9 having few “firsts” to it, future Samsung devices may be less about innovation and more about a refined experience. Samsung  already announced the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus , but Mobile World Congress 2018 is still in full swing. During a press conference with Korean reporters, head of Mobile at Samsung DJ Koh had some interesting things to say about the future of the company and innovation. “We were obsessed with being the world’s first and industry’s first, rather than thinking about how this innovation could be meaningful to consumers,” said Koh. “Being the first is no longer important today, and our strategy is to launch something that consumers believe is meaningful and valuable at the right time.” Samsung certainly

Oregon joins states trying to pass net neutrality legislation

Image
Huffington Post Lawmakers in Oregon are attempting to pass legislation that would circumvent FCC rules on Net Neutrality. Oregon joins several other states that are trying to pass legislation or executive orders to keep Net Neutrality going. With Net Neutrality officially ending in April, the clock is ticking to enact viable solutions. Although the Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal Net Neutrality in December , that hasn’t stopped individual states from attempting to bring some degree of neutrality to their own districts. Oregon is the latest state to introduce legislation  that circumvents the FCC, without technically contradicting its rules. Oregon’s proposal seeks to make it illegal for state agencies to sign internet service contracts with companies that don’t abide by net neutrality practices . In other words, a state government operation like a public school or courthouse would have its choices of internet service providers limited to companies with neut

Bandai Namco’s free-to-play Tekken Mobile is available from the Play Store

Image
After launching in several territories around the world, Bandai Namco finally launched Tekken Mobile in the U.S. — two days ahead of schedule. Whether you should actually download the free-to-play title is another matter. If you have played mobile fighting games like Injustice 2 and Transformers: Forged to Fight, you mostly know how to play Tekken Mobile. Tap and hold on the left part of the screen to guard, while consecutive taps on the right lead to a combo. Tap and hold on the right side to execute a more powerful attack that can break an opponent’s block. Swipe left or right to shift your character across the screen in that direction. It is a system that works well on Tekken Mobile, but it’s hardly original. The big twist is the cards system. Cards represent your special moves and show up on the bottom right of your screen. You can combo together these special strikes to inflict significant damage on your opponent. For example, you can use a guard break, followed by a j

AT&T announces two new unlimited plans and city-specific offers

Image
Blii Bradford/Flickr AT&T announced Unlimited Plus Enhanced and Unlimited Choice Enhanced, which will supersede the existing Unlimited Plus and Unlimited Choice plans, respectively. The carrier also announced city-specific deals for residents of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. The new plans and deals will be available starting Thursday, March 1. In the midst of AT&T’s ongoing court battle with the FTC, the company announced two new unlimited plans: Unlimited Plus Enhanced and Unlimited Choice Enhanced. AT&T also announced a series of deals only available for customers living in New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Starting with the new plans, Unlimited Plus Enhanced offers 15 GB of mobile hotspot data for $85 per month. This will replace the current Unlimited Plus plan, which costs $10 more per month and includes 10 GB of mobile hotspot data. Meanwhile, AT&T said Unlimited Choice Enhanced would only feature unlimited 4G LTE data at $40 a line when

Sprint bringing Massive MIMO to six cities, prepping for 5G

Image
Sprint Sprint will bring Massive MIMO to six American cities in April. The upgrade will give Sprint subscribers in those cities better and faster service. The upgrades will enable a 5G network rollout in the future, via a software upgrade. Only phones that can use band 41 will gain any advantages from Massive MIMO. From the promotional image above ( posted on Twitter today ), it seems Sprint will bring its 5G network to six major U.S. cities. See the big 5G in the middle? Those cities are getting 5G, right? After scrutinizing the text in the image, reading through the related press release , and watching Sprint’s helpful YouTube video (posted below), here’s what we know: those six American cities are getting upgraded tower hardware, which will enable 5G to rollout at some point in the future. Calling the upgraded hardware Massive MIMO, Sprint is prepping Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., for its future 5G network. Slated to arrive

T-Mobile mocks “duopoly” and promises 5G in 30 cities in 2018

Image
In true T-Mobile fashion, the company put out a press release mocking its competition and promising 5G in 30 cities by the end of the year. The company explains its 5G will be superior to its competitors’ 5G because it will be mobile rather than fixed. T-Mobile knows it can’t be first in the race to 5G, so it instead intends to be the best. The 5G news just keeps on coming today . T-Mobile made a statement from Mobile World Congress 2018 on its own ambitions for future wireless data coverage. Taking time to first mock the “duopoly” (AT&T and Verizon, perhaps in the form of a giant snow beast ), T-Mobile announced that it would have “real” 5G in 30 American cities by the end of 2018 . While both AT&T and Verizon revealed they would offer  5G-enabled hotspots in place of smartphones to access each of their upcoming 5G networks, T-Mobile made no such promise. Instead, the nation’s third-largest carrier stated its intention to play “the long game,” focusing on buildi

Google launches Flutter beta, a dev platform for both Android and iOS

Image
Flutter is an app development platform that works with both Android and iOS. With one set of code, app developers can create and release apps for both operating systems at the same time. This will hopefully lead to a less fragmented Android experience. One of the biggest issues Android faces is fragmentation . With hundreds of manufacturers creating thousands of devices with different display sizes and hardware capabilities, it’s difficult to control anything in regards to the operating system and its apps. In contrast, Apple controls all iPhones and iPads and has a very limited number of device sizes and capabilities to keep in mind when developing new apps. The result of this dichotomy is that apps are made for iOS first because it’s far simpler to do. An Android app then eventually follows . Google has been trying to formulate a solution to this problem for years, which is why the company must be incredibly excited that Flutter beta is launching today . Flutter is an app

Is there literally 0 market for 16:9 and/or 4.7-5.2" displays anymore?

I'm looking at all these new phones come out, not just at MWC, but any time during the year. It's absolutely blowing me away how many are 6"+ screen phones, especially with 18+:9 aspect ratio. Is there seriously 0 market for phones that can be easily used in one hand? I get that the super bezel-less 5.8" ~18:9 phones, like the S8, S9, and iPhone X, are reasonably easy to use one-handed, but surely at least 10% of the global population would prefer a smaller phone? The number of iPhone 6-8 and 5s-SE models I see just around where I live equates to at least a quarter of all phones; not to mention that most Androids are the S5-S8. Does anyone have statistics on this, or feel like it's only happening because it's the latest trend? I know that the top ~10 OEMs wouldn't just release larger phones every year without extensively researching and making sure there's a good market for them, but it still seems surprising that there isn't enough desire at al

(UK) Lets talk about S9 & S9+ pricing - what are some of the best deals you have seen?

Best deal I have seen is with the trade-in offer at Samsung. They take off £96 for a iphone5s & £150 for a Iphone6 etc. O2 and vodafone want £60 + and 50 upfront however with 02 they do say you get a free replacement screen (just one?) and a free upgrade next year (not sure how reliable that is) Submitted February 26, 2018 at 04:34PM by Hamilton_and_Arsenal http://ift.tt/2EVkmDO http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

Rootless Pixel Launcher 3.2 - The Launcher. Reimagined.

This is an incremental update to my last Rootless Pixel Launcher release. Make sure you have read the previous thread for the 3.0 release, and check if your question or bug report is not in the FAQ before commenting. 3.0 release: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/7sxe7a/rootless_pixel_launcher_30_based_on_aosp_81/ Additional FAQ entries: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/7sxe7a/rootless_pixel_launcher_30_based_on_aosp_81/dt9tztc/ It has been a month since I released the new Pixel 2 version of my Rootless Pixel Launcher project, which started all the way back in May of 2017. Thanks to this project I managed to get my name out, and I love all the positive reception the launcher has gotten from those that want a “close to stock” experience. After the 3.1 release some interesting feature requests kept popping up so I thought I could give them a shot, as well as fixing some often reported bugs. I worked together with the alpha testers on Telegram for a month on making th

Could post-Treble monthly security updates be a good indication whether Treble will have any real-world impact on Android OS version updates?

In theory, Treble should make it easier for manufacturers to push security updates too. Do the existing Treble phones receive these updates? Opinion: Google needs to create an iOS like Home app

In my opinion, Google should create a “Home” app with Android P. This would be similar to Apple’s Home where all your IoT devices (smart lights, plugs and etc) can be controlled instead of using multiple apps. In addition, this feature will also be available to control smart devices via the status bar (like this (Samsung Connect on the status bar of an S8) or like this (iOS Control Center) The situation in Android is that you need multiple apps to control your lights (assuming you go the first party route), or use a third party app from a developer you don’t know to control your IoT devices. You could use Assistant to control your devices, but it has to be either typed, or tell it via voice what to do. The voice one is convenient (I even use it with the Google Home and Amazon Echo), but it is inconvenient to use when you can’t talk (i.e people are sleeping). You could also buy (huge emphasis on that) a Harmony Hub or a Samsung SmartThing Hub that will allow you have some IoT d

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Some are saying this bill could kill the internet. Others say it wont because bill seems to outline a pretty high burden of proof of intent or reckless disregard. Showing that a spammer could circumvented whatever moderating system you have in place would seem to easily defeat that burden of proof of intent. What should we expect from Sony this year?

Google announces things WAY TOO EARLY.

The Google i/o 2018 is about to happen and still several things announced a year ago have to be delivered. As another example, more than a month ago Google announced it was merging Android Pay and Google Wallet, then last week they actually did it, but not really since the services won’t actually be merged but in the next few months. Google, why don’t you just freaking release your new stuff when they’re ready, or at least about to be ready instead of creating unnecessary anticipation?? I’ve seen that this way to early announcements have even killed many great ideas or let Facebook or Apple to steal them.
