My 2017 - The year of switching, and the P10.

31 of December and 2017 is soon to end. For me it has been a year of smartphones, and to be honest a year of unfulfillment... I thought I share my story, please let me know yours. Going into 2017 I had a OnePlus 3 (not T, and I was still pissed about that). Before that I had a OnePlus one and I felt home with the OnePlus phones. However I got a new job were I was allowed to choose my one phone and decided to choose a phone for its camera since that was what the OnePlus was lacking. Since I was on a budget (kind of) I went for the Huawei P10. The Huawei P10 was actually a great phone and the camera was great, I am definitely not a pro photographer but I really liked the results. My only problem we that coming from OnePlus, the phone developed for the entusiast i felt that the P10 was a little "meh". I therefore, went back to OnePlus by purchasing the OP5. Holy moly was that a snappy phone. Super fast and fluid software and a much better camera them in the 3T. However, see...

Apple vs Android and CPU throttling

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Major android companies recently claimed they never throttle CPU of consumer devices. This is a discussion of that hypocrisy. Not only have android phones throttled CPU usage in secret in the past, they did it to trick customers into believing their phones were faster than reality. imore article discussing this And what follows is some high points and additional links and information. Apple extending the end of life of a battery is evil, and android has never done such a thing!! At least that is what the major manufacturers want you to think. Note, all of their announcements specifically say “we do not throttle CPU performance in relation to battery life.” That is true, but they have throttled their CPU for other reasons. galaxy s4 cheats on benchmark tests , giving users false expectations of performance galaxy note also caught cheating Geekbench found Sony doing the same. Mate 9 Camera Disappointing

So I bought a mate 9 on Black Friday to upgrade from a Moto E4. 90% of the motivation to upgrade was for the camera. I've been using the mate 9 for a month now and I was looking back at some of the my pictures and realized I actually struggle to differentiate between the mate 9 and E4 pictures which just shocks me based on the reviews. I'll post a couple side by side comparisons later today but Im just looking g for a guy check, is something wrong with the mate 9 or could the E4 actually have a comparable camera? Suggestion for Chromecast: Allow audio to play through phone's headphones while casting video.

I just thought of a cool idea for the Chromecast, having the option while casting video to have the audio from the video play through the headphones connected to your phone, with the video on the Chromecast. That would give you the benefit of the large screen but still allow you to listen privately without having the audio playing for everyone in your house. Having the headphones connected to your phone instead of your tv allows you to move around without taking the headphones off, similar to how the PlayStation 4 controller works with the inbuilt headphone jack. What do you think about this? Submitted December 30, 2017 at 01:57PM by themrpiggy22 http://ift.tt/2CeIpAe http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

[PSA] HQ Trivia for Android automatically turns up media volume without user interaction

I didn't even know it was possible without special permissions, but it apparently is. You can reproduce it by muting your media volume and then opening the app (it only happens after a fresh start, so swiping the app from recents first may be necessary). The worst thing is, it does so even if you're not actively using the app , maybe it runs in background from time to time to check for notifications or whatever. This happens without the user noticing, you don't see the volume slider going up, and that may lead to some embarrassing situations, where you know you muted audio, only for it turning itself up to 70% in the worst moments. I'm using version 0.9.3 beta and already contacted the developers, but I thought it would be useful to share it to everybody, since someone may think it's an hardware issue with their phones (even though that should at least show the volume slider). Does anyone really trust the install counts provided by the Play Store

Looking at the bottom number of downloads on Minecraft which is 10 million and costs $6.99. I wonder. Did the app really make $69,900,000? WTF? AND it's reporting 10 million to 50 million downloads. For all we know it could be in the 40's and that means it could be $279,600,000. That's insane! (- fees etc) And the play store lists in app purchases between $0.99 and $49.99. Can't even imagine that. Does anyone really believe download installs listed on the play store? Submitted December 31, 2017 at 04:07AM by lucklouie http://ift.tt/2zSP7G2 http://ift.tt/eA8V8J

[Discussion] Which Android device aged poorly throughout its lifecycle of 2 years?

Was thinking back to my old HTC One X and that thing aged so poorly by the time it was 2014. It had a lot of specs that were shortsighted to say the least (Tegra 3 with only 1800mAh battery) that only served to cripple it faster. The processor was also so locked down that many devs left after less than a year, leaving development scarce. Which devices do you feel aged poorly during its 2 year life cycle, because of its specs, software, or trouble in the OEM itself? CMV: Greenify is still required in Oreo. Doze, App Standby & limiting Background Activity cannot substitute hibernation

I have read several times that "Greenify is no longer required after Marshmallow because of Doze". I disagree. Disclaimer: I've no app-writing knowledge, just a long-time Android user with 300+ apps on a rooted Nexus 6P. I did some research to form the opinion below. Feel free to point out my misconceptions! Doze can only save battery during screen-off time, by disabling network access, denying wakelock and JobScheduler until predefined "maintenance window". ForceDoze merely shorten the time between screen-off and Doze. It doesn't help when my screen is on. All apps become "active" when I exit Doze, and the phone may become slow when I switch on the screen. App Standby can "doze" apps during screen-on time, but it only applies to apps that are inactive for some time. (I cannot find how long it takes to become inactive) All apps become "active" when charging, and phone may slow down the moment I start charging. The Backgro...

Roamit is now completely free and open source!

Hey guys, I've launched Roamit on Android a few months ago, shortly after its release on Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile . (For those who are not familiar with Roamit, it's an app to share links, synchronize clipboard content, and quickly share files via local Wi-Fi between Windows 10 and Android devices) Today, I'm happy to announce that I've made Roamit completely free and open source in celebration of new year. All limitations are now relieved from Android version. On the Windows version, currently you can tap Upgrade button to remove limitations, the price for In-App-Purchase is 0$. (I'll remove the upgrade button and limitations completely in an update for the Windows 10 app soon too) Also, both Windows 10 and Android versions of the app are now open source, and the code is available here on my Github . Thanks for all the feedback I've received from you, and happy holidays :) You can get Roamit for Windows 10, Android, and Firefox/Chrome browser ex...

For £150 you get a good camera, decent specs and a 5.5 inch screen with USB-C charging. Why isn't there more coverage of the Sony flagship, the XZ premium? I haven't seen any of the tech Youtubers I watch even mention it. Is it just uninteresting, or not as good compared to Samsung and LG etc. I am genuinely interested as an Android lover and user, why these phones have not sold as much as their competitors. After all the battery fiasco, I feel like Samsung's new battery tech used in S8 and Note 8 is really getting overlooked.

The battery will retain 95% of its capacity after two years. This is considerably less wear than the batteries currently widely used (typically 80% after 2 years). In a year to two years time it will help significantly with the performance of the device ie. no early shutdowns, no sudden percentage changes. Facebook to Make $12 Billion from its VOD Service

http://ift.tt/eA8V8J Facebook's video-on-demand platform Watch can add up to $12 million to the social network's revenue by 2022. This has been predicted by equities analyst, Brent Thill, who says that Facebook's light and ”snackab/e"content is likely to bring more repeat views, leading to higher revenue per user Thill compliments Facebook's data-driven approach of pitching the right content to the right users and says that this approach will dominate the online video segment in near future. Facebook's bet on engaging short content instead of long-form videos will help it compete well against the top players in the segment. Which Android phones have lasted you 3 years (or more?)

I read that first discussion about which phones lasted less than 2 years, and it seems like there are a LOT of flagship phones that died well within 2 years. I have always wanted to have the flagship phone so it would last me 3 years/be a little future proof, but it hasn't worked out. But if flagships are not lasting very long, Im starting to think paying a $400/year subscription to have a great smartphone is a little too much. Tell me which worked out for you, and what manufacturer(s) you really think make the longest lasting phones? As for me, I've constantly had to switch phones within 2 years since I got my first smartphone (droid Bionic) due to performance issues. My HTC m8 was doing fine just after 2 years, but couldn't keep up running Uber (Driver), Google Maps, and Spotify without very sluggish performance so I needed to upgrade. I chose the S7E the day it came out (IIRC March 2016?), and so far it's my favorite phone. So far the S7 Edge is doing pretty well....

Just asking because I just bought a Xiaomi Mi A1, reviewers were pretty meh about it, but I got it to replace my iPhone 6s and I'm absolutely stunned by it. It's fast, never a stutter, multitasks amazingly well, the camera has already given me some of the best photos I've ever taken on a phone camera. I can't rave enough about the thing! ULPT: What if all these OEMS start providing regular updates, because they they didn't realize Apple was doing it to slow down their older devices, so they can sell their newer ones?

Since we just heard that HTC and Motorola don't engage in this practice , do you think this is something more OEMS would start doing now, considering they now have a ROI reason to provide updates to older devices? Rant: Android OEMs don't slow down their phones like Apple does because they CAN'T.

Preface: I've done smartphone repairs/sold replacement batteries for ~6 years. Edit: just to be clear I am not defending Apple's throttling in any way. They should have been more transparent and upfront to their customers about it, and at this point justifying or criticizing it is beating a dead horse. I should have made it more obvious that I'm referring to this article titled "HTC and Motorola say they don’t slow old phones like Apple does" where: An HTC spokesperson said that designing phones to slow down their processor as their battery ages “is not something we do.” and A Motorola spokesperson said, “We do not throttle CPU performance based on older batteries.” They couldn't slow down a phone that had a worn out battery to prevent unexpected shutdowns even if they wanted to . It's not that they won't because it'd upset users; they can't because they have no way of reliably determining if a battery is worn out "on the fly...

Apple's approach to the iPhone battery concerns is exactly what Google should have done with the Nexus 6P.

You may or may not have seen the recent article Apple posted about the iPhones battery performance, and how they are offering battery repairs for $29 and updating iOS to include information about battery performance that will be visible to the user. This is exactly what Google should have done with the Nexus 6P where there are loads of people (including myself) who experienced random shutdowns where the device wouldn't reboot until it was plugged in (SOL if you are in an emergency and don't have a charger). To be honest, this really puts Google to shame. With all the talk of how Google is an "AI" first company, they sure don't like to provide consumers with actually beneficial features, like reporting when the battery is under-performing physically . What's the use of Doze, background throttling, app standby and all these optimisations if the physical cell itself is the issue? These changes don't magically fix the chemistry, and don't give consu...

Is there an old phone that you never got but still really want?

Sometimes you just want something that at the time you either could not afford or simply did not buy, but you still want to own. For me, it's LG G4 - I just liked how this phone looked, it's design and its camera. Never bought it when it was in its prime but always wanted it. So I got one in late 2017. Pretty decent phone with a spectacular camera but of course has LG's well known quality issues. Nexus 5X - Don't own this, but this phone really makes me hate LG. Right now, this would've been the go to phone for all budget minded. Costs around $200, great design, camera that shoots way above its price point, stock Android. If only LG hadn't messed it up. I may still take a risk on it later on. Galaxy S6 - One of the best daylight cameras ever made. Beats both the S7 and the S8 in daylight. I like its design too. Want to own one, but it's still a bit expensive. Submitted December 27, 2017 at 09:39AM by DiplomatikEmunetey http://ift.tt/2ljArLc http://i...

Why aren't phone screens made of sapphire crystal?

This baffles me. A phone which costs a $1000 should have sapphire crystal. Like I do not see why this is not feasible. Yes it may be expensive but it is such a good material. I am not asking for the whole device to be made of sapphire crystal just the screen as a cost saving measure. Sapphire crystal doesn't scratch as gorilla glass or some compound of sapphire glass. I really do look forward to the day where I can carry my phone without a screen protector without worrying about scratches. Tissots have sapphire crystal glass why can't phones? I know HTC did have a variant of the U ultra I think it was with sapphire crystal but that's really it. The iPhone has some compound containing sapphire crystal but isn't fully sapphire crystal as a cost saving measure. If phones are going to have 2.5D glass the least manufacturers can do is resort to sapphire crystal. What do you guys think? [Opinion] After answering any question, Google Assistant should wait a few second for follow-up question.

Google's aim is to make assistant more conversational and make it feel natural, right? But having to say "Hey Google" for every question breaks that "I'm having a natural conversation" illusion. For example - User: Hey Google. Assistant: bloop Me: What's the temperature outside? Assistant: It's 32 degrees outside right now in Seattle. User: Hey Google. Assistant: bloop User: Is it going to rain today? Assistant: No, it doesn't look like it is. User: Hey Google. Assistant: bloop . User: How about tomorrow? Assistant: There's forecast for rain tomorrow evening in Seattle. That's how it typically goes for most users. Granted, you don't necessarily need to wait for the bloop. You can ask your question immediately after without waiting. Two problem with that - 1) Most users don't know it. 2) Even if you know it, the bloop still happens and now it will happen while you are asking your question and that throws me off ever...

An In-Depth Review on the Google Pixel Buds

When Google removed the headphone jack from the Google Pixel 2, they had to provide an alternative. The Google Pixel buds are in my opinion a fantastic alternative which make me wonder why I didn't switch to wireless earlier. I'm sure you've seen all the negative reviews for these cute little headphones however the experiences shared by the Verge, the Guardian, engadget and more don't seem to reflect my time with the Pixel Buds over the last couple days. Maybe I'm biased since I received these £160 earphones as a Christmas present, or I'm simply more tolerant of its shortcomings. In my view, the most important feature of wireless earphones is, well, the audio. It's not hi-fi quality and probably won't be the best audio experience you can get for the high price tag however (again in my opinion) it provides the perfect balance between treble and bass, making sure that the highs and vocals aren't overwhelmed by bass. That being said, the Pixel Buds d...

Spotify to Google Play Music - My observances on switching for a week

I've used Spotify for well over a year and as my first music streaming service, it's amazing, and Spotify is amazing. The idea of being able to keep all of my music on one cohesive server under one app at the convenience of $9.99 a month was astonishing, and it kept me entertained for such a long time. I listened to music nearly everyday, and on my device (LG G3 - Verizon), it was horribly slow. This was my one big drawback with the app, and through multiple re-installs of the app it would only temporarily solve my problem before popping back up again. Again, I don't know if this was an issue with my poor wifi signal or with my phone, but I do have good enough internet to stream 4k Netflix over wifi, and the G3 is still a flagship albeit a bit old now, so this left me scratching my head. GPM never really caught my eye, but over the last week I've been using it under the free 4 month trial offered with the Play Stores 12 day special, and its been an entirely differen...
