LG is supplying notched OLEDs to Google (Update: More Pixel 3 info just leaked)
Update 5/30/2018 at 5:15 P.M. EST: The article below details information that suggests the upcoming Google Pixel 3 (or Pixel 3 XL) will have a notched display. We now have some new information via Roland Quandt that backs the idea that at least one of the Pixel 3 devices (likely the Pixel 3 XL) will feature the notch:
Google really is going it alone: there are two Google Pixel 3 devices in the works, both based on SDM845. One has “new display hardware”, both are built by Foxconn – not HTC, LG or whomever. Launch timeframe is Aug/Sep 2018. https://t.co/CelnTfO5IB
— Roland Quandt (@rquandt) May 30, 2018
The tweet also suggests that Google will design and build the Pixel 3 line completely in-house, rather than employing help from other smartphone manufacturers as it’s done in the past. Quandt also claims the devices will sport a Snapdragon 845, which honestly is probably dead on.
There’s also a report from Bloomberg citing an anonymous source that backs up the claim that the Pixel 3 will not feature a notch while the Pixel 3 XL will. The anonymous source’s information lines up well with Quandt’s, adding in that Verizon will be the exclusive U.S. carrier partner, as usual, and that the Pixel 3 XL will feature two front-facing camera lenses.
Original Article: According to an article appearing on a Korean news site called DDaily (English translated version), LG will supply OLEDs to Google. This isn’t that remarkable, as LG and Google work together for display technology all the time.
What is remarkable is the displays feature a notch. While we can only speculate at this point, this information does suggest the possibility that the upcoming Google Pixel 3 could feature a notched display.
Over the past few days, some rumors have circulated on the web that the Google Pixel 3 will not feature a notch but the Google Pixel 3 XL will. The source of this rumor is a tweet (since deleted) from a “leaker” with no prior credibility. As such, Android Authority chose to ignore the rumor.
However, with this news that LG will supply notched displays to Google, it does suggest that the leaker’s information could be true.
Regardless of the leaker’s lack of credibility, that hasn’t stopped other sites from running with the leak, even going so far as to make mock-up renders of what the Google Pixel 3 lineup will look like:
To be clear, those images could be wildly off-target, as we don’t know anything about the upcoming Pixel lineup at all, other than the devices will likely launch this Fall.
If the Pixel 3 XL does feature a notch, it will surely cause some negative reactions in the Android community. Android enthusiasts have made it abundantly clear that the notch design element is not favored. With Google’s devices being the go-to source for a smartphone that gets the latest Android updates, it will force users to choose between their love of Android and their hatred of the notch.
What do you think? Would you buy a Pixel 3 if it has a notch? Let us know in the comments!
