With round corner LCD we could have 5" phone under 120mm. Yet galaxy S11 is planed to be 6.4-6.9". Seriously?
It's a wonder why manufacturers are currently making giant phones.
The fact that big phones is the trend is not what is the most surprising, what is really surprising is that there is absolutly NO small smartphones available.
The truth is, I loved my iphone4 because it was small and convenient. When it died I got myself a yotaphone2, which was awesome because of the eink panel. But whoa that was already so big, not comfortable to carry in pockets. But then it died again, and now what? All those phones looking very sexy with their full surface screen. I got a Honor View 20, and when I got it I was like "WHAT THE HELL I CAN'T BEND MY LEG WITH THAT FRIDGE IN MY POCKET". I was actually lucky that it could even fit in my pocket. But that wasn't enough, nooo. So the next line of galaxy is planed to be even bigger.
As an electronic/product designer myself, I decided that it would be great to make a small smartphone. I can't be the only one there who's not pissed by this phone gigantism. So I started to look how it could be done. I soon realized one crazy thing: With round-corner LCD and small bezel similar to 2019 smartphones, we could actually have 5" phones, with 16/9 aspect ratio and only 119mm height!
But I realized that it might be more difficult than anticipated... But not for the reason you may think. Designing the PCBs, mechanical and so on is not difficult. The problem is that component manufacturers (qualcomm, LCD manufacturers...) don't even reply to you if you don't plan to make hundred thousands devices.
The only way I found to make it possible, is to first find enough people interested. Then when we'll be a significant amount of people all the manufacturers will suddenly be replying to messages.
Anyway if you too would like to see small smartphones again you can check OneDevice projet on www.onedevice.eu
Please let me know what you think of it :)
