If Android was closed sourced.

I was talking about a friend about fragmentation and other stuff related to iOS. And this struck me. I would like to have your thots on this.

So instead of AOSP being free, manufacturers pay a certain fee to Google to get permission to use it. But they can't modify the code without Google. Do you think could've prevented fragmentation on Android? Do you think manufacturers would make better and more finished products instead? What challenges would manufactures face? And what would be benefits?
