Surface Duo YouTube embargo is straight up shady and shouldn't be encouraged.

Lately all smartphone releases goes through the same pattern. Youtubers get early hands on and are said to lift the embargo at the exact time that the company sets.

This creates lots of buzz and becomes talk of the town when all Youtubers post their video at once.

Microsoft has taken very clever approach here by making sure Youtubers shows the only part they want it to be highlighted.

All the youtubers have gotten their review unit in a nicely packaged form and are said to post only the hardware(not even display) part of it. It would've been ok if the software wasn't ready but the device is already been showcased in variety of shops. So what's the point of holding software, camera, performance part of it? How long will the embargo last? Few weeks until they sell good amount of it?

YouTubers wants coverage and views hence they are tied to this agreement and I dont blame them fully as they have their own bills to pay. But this is straight up shady and unethical. Where do we draw the line? Tomorrow Pixel will order youtubers to post only camera review first and full review after a month until they get first good sales. OnePlus may only let YouTubers show gaming review first.

Isn't this another way of marketing a product through youtubers by only letting them show the good part of the device?

Not a single YouTuber has the permission to show anything about the Surface Duo apart from its magical hardware. Heck not even let them show us the device being turned on to actually see the display. This IMO is very bad move that many companies will take advantage of it in future.
