If ARM had a BIOS equivalent, as x86 does on PC, could the Android updates situation be improved?
From the many posts I've seen about "Why is Android so terrible at updates?", the two key takeaways I've gotten are that this is because:
1) Linux doesn't have a stable driver API, and because its always changing, this can break drivers and OEMs simply don't wanna spend the resources on supporting these drivers (I'm on Linus's side of the argument, but it seems very unlikely OEMs like Qualcomm would ever open source their drivers)
2) This situation is made worse by the fact that ARM has no hardware driver interface, like a BIOS, and lacks features such as Plug and Play
So, assuming the open sourcing of drivers on the OEM's part is "infeasible", if ARM came up with a proper BIOS-like interface, could the issue be fixed? At least partially?
If so, could Google pressure ARM and OEMs hard enough to create a universal interface like this?
