Open source alternatives to popular apps:

  • There are many open source reddit, facebook & twitter clients better than official ones (which are usually bloated); For example, both RedReader & Slide are better than official Reddit app.

  • Newpipe is a very nice YouTube client which does not need an account & stores subscriptions locally..

  • "Delta chat" mimics WhatsApp in design.. While it is still in development stage, it is worth checking since it uses existing email infrastructure with openpgp support.

  • K9 mail has very simple interface with OpenPGP support -- there is an unofficial fork with material design.. In my opinion it is better than resource hungry apps such as outlook.

  • NetGuard lets you block network traffic for certain apps & hostname filtering using a local VPN -- I heard non-play store version can also block ads.

  • If you want to use DNS configurations without root access, DNS66 is nice.

  • LibreTorrent is a light, nicely designed torrent client..

  • Orgzly is better than most other proprietary note taking apps.

  • Red Moon -- blue light filtering app just like popular "Twilight" & "Blue light filter" -- But not even Internet permissions.

  • And many others...

The another advantage is they are usually ad-free and less resource-hungry than shady ad-filled apps or tracking-heavy apps.

PS: Many of above apps are available on F-droid but not play store. Eg: NewPipe.

comment any other nice open source apps you know.
