Possible solution to missing messages in the Android Messages app
tl;dr: Remove hyphens and weird formats from phone numbers in contacts list using Google's Contacts app from the play store.
Many users of Google's Android Messages app were receiving, but not able to view some messages in the app when the 2.3.265 update was released in July. The problem has been fixed, but some users like me still experienced missing texts. Due to some sheer luck, I think I figured out what the issue is. Different contact apps that come with different phones store numbers in different ways. If Android Messages doesn't like the format the number is saved in, it won't show texts received from that number.
For example, I have some numbers in my contacts list that are not people. A five digit number (like 54732) send notifications whenever my debit card is used. 22000 is used as the Google Authenticator. When I saved these numbers using Samsung's built in contacts app on my S7, they saved in the format ###-## (So 220-00 for the Google Authenticator).
Because the app doesn't like this format for some reason, any texts received from the saved contact (Google Authenticator in this case) won't show up in the app, but they'll show up in another texting app. I found the missing texts in Samsung's built in Messages app.
Samsung's contacts app saves 5 digit numbers like this (###-##) and you can't remove the hyphen unless you use a different app. I used Google's Contacts app from the play store to remove all the hyphens from these numbers. After I did this, they showed up perfectly in Android Messages. When I made a purchase with my card later that day, I got a text saying that I used the card.
I'm guessing that Android Messages can't recognize the format that other built in contacts apps use to save numbers. Some users are reporting that they're missing texts from people too rather than just bots. I'm guessing that the contact's number they’re missing texts from is not saved in a format that the app likes. Anyways, changing the format for the numbers fixed it for me. Can anyone else replicate this?
Note: Android Messages can receive messages in the "(###) ###-####" and ########## formats for US numbers for sure. Maybe more. It seems like a lot of other formats aren't supported.
