Check out this stretchable battery that could power your future wearable

Image
Most smartwatches and fitness wearables need to be designed in a certain way because they need to house a rigid battery. However, a team at Stanford has a good idea for how to fix that: what if you had a stretchable battery that could move with your body? As first shown off on the Stanford engineering site , the stretchable battery prototype can move, bend, and stretch in all manners of ways. While that’s happening, the current created by the battery is unaffected. In the video above, you can see how the battery (the goopy-looking white thing) powers a small LED light. Notice that as the person stretches and moves the battery around, the light doesn’t even so much as flicker. The team at Stanford created this prototype based on previous technology. In many lithium-ion batteries (such as the one in your smartphone), there’s a polymer gel that moves negative ions to the battery’s positive pole, which creates energy. The Stanford team figured out a way to make that liquid polymer ...

Deal: Big savings or BOGO on Moto G phones from Motorola

Image
Motorola has just hit a landmark of selling 100 million Moto G phones. It’s celebrating this milestone with some great deals, many of which give you the choice of big savings or a free second phone when you buy one. One of the deals, in particular, is a genuine two-for-one. If you’re interested in the Moto G6 or Moto G6 Play , then purchasing one gets you a second 32GB model for free . Most of the other deals on more expensive phones offer you the choice between a free G6 or G6 play, or cash savings on your device of choice. For example, if you want to pick up the sleek Moto G7 , you have two options: If you want the savings, you can knock $100 off the asking price and pay just $199.99. Alternatively, you can get a free 32GB Moto G6 or G6 Play thrown in. There are many other offers, including a 10% sitewide discount for students and military personnel. We’re not sure how long this Motorola promotion lasts, so check out the deals via any of the widgets below. Remember, instead...

My girlfriends stance on privacy got us in an argument and I need help for discussion about cybersecurity

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Hello there. I had a discussion with my girlfriend about privacy. Normally she is a loving and moderate human but she shocked me pretty hard in this discussion. We are talking about Switzerland, so it is not a NSA/US centered discussion. She has the opinion that it is not a problem if the government watches everyone secretly and tapped phone calls, activates your webcam etc. She says that the government has no interest in what you privately, with whom you exchange nudes and if you like to be on top or on the bottom while sex. She said that it is a good trade off when the government is able to access every personal information for having a secure society and that it is a nice thought that everyone has his absolute privacy but we live in a society and without surveillance in any kind the state wouldnt be able to get any criminal. Another argument also was the classical if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear because the government cant harm you with ...

If ARM had a BIOS equivalent, as x86 does on PC, could the Android updates situation be improved?

From the many posts I've seen about "Why is Android so terrible at updates?", the two key takeaways I've gotten are that this is because: 1) Linux doesn't have a stable driver API, and because its always changing, this can break drivers and OEMs simply don't wanna spend the resources on supporting these drivers (I'm on Linus's side of the argument, but it seems very unlikely OEMs like Qualcomm would ever open source their drivers) 2) This situation is made worse by the fact that ARM has no hardware driver interface, like a BIOS, and lacks features such as Plug and Play So, assuming the open sourcing of drivers on the OEM's part is "infeasible", if ARM came up with a proper BIOS-like interface, could the issue be fixed? At least partially? If so, could Google pressure ARM and OEMs hard enough to create a universal interface like this? What do you do with your phone when it no longer recieves new security updates after 3 or 4 years since it's launch?

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J I recently bought a note 9 which at this point is close to 1.5 years old. It seems that Samsung either supports security updates for 3 or 4 years so in the next 1.5 to 2.5 years presumably my phone will no longer recieve new updates. Realistically is this a real safety concern? Should it prompt me to stop using the device? Would a VPN help regain some of the security lost when updates stop coming? What does everyone else do? Music Aux Collaboration Tech

https://ift.tt/eA8V8J Is there any type of technology to collaborate on "DJing" (music queuing) an event or party? Like so that one person doesn't have to be "on aux" the entire time. Looking for something like this and wondering if others experience the same problem. The idea would be a kahoot-style music lobby where people can suggest and up/down vote songs to be added to a queue, based on which music services the host computer has connected. This way, no one would have the social pressure nor physical requirement to keep his/her phone close by. Wasn't exactly sure if this post fit the subreddit perfectly, but figured it was close enough. Let me know what you think, thanks! Submitted January 30, 2020 at 03:45AM by Gavry https://ift.tt/2ObjXnw
