Moto Z Play + Turbo Power mod, thoughts

Okay, well I am on my third Z Play now. (one I ruined, one I sold)

I still think this is the most reliable phone I ever had, I have a Turbo Power Mod with it and you will forever be spoiled on batterylife. I can not remember the last time I reached below 50% battery, truly.

The connections are all fine, wifi, network speed etc are all absolutely great.

The design is not for everyone, large bezels may scare some people off, but it does allow for the FPS to be on the front at least.

It's about 7 mm thin/thick, which is great in my opinion, I can't imagine how the first gen regular Moto Z looked with it's 5,2mm yet I am impressed by it.

My use case is having a pretty bright screen on (except when in bed in the dark), wifi or 4g on at all times, often play on Drastic emulator, browse a lot, chat a lot.

Now on the issue of typing, the haptic feedback is fantastic (I set it to relatively mid-high vibrations via Swiftkey)

The battery.... I barely even track it anymore, I know that my day is 150% covered and then some, especially if I bring the mod along, which is usually reserved for when I travel somewhere, I can use the phone super heavily and still come home having battery left. It's insane.

The performance is great, not quite flagship level of course with a SD 625, but still fantastic, I don't really require more, even with the Drastic emulator games, even with the fast forward option in the emulator. (which are mostly pokemon games)

Add to that it's pretty cheap now and I see this phone being great for MOST people. It's simply got everything except for a good camera.

I wouldn't say the camera is bad or trash, just 'meh', it's definitely serviceable though.

I heard it will get Oreo but knowing Motorola they are the 'slow but steady' type of updaters, meaning it will get Oreo... next decade.

All in all I am extremely satisfied.

If you have any questions I will be glad to answer them.

Additional things:

  • You don't have to hit the power button to turn the phone on or off, both are achieved by hitting the FPS.

  • The FPS has a functionality that is extremely useful, when apps go in fullscreen you just lightly and quickly tap the FPS, this brings the nav bar up for access.

  • Moto gestures are of course present and really useful (chop for flashlight, twist for camera).

  • Camera does have slow motion.

  • Without a style mod on the back it might be slippery (glass), but with the included one it has plenty of grip.

  • I would say only the battery mods are barely worth it, the rest you are actually better off just buying universal solutions for. (like a standalone bluetooth speaker) Unless you really want the compatibility which I admit is nice, getting them free is great of course.
